Battersea Ironsides
4 - 2
Feltham Wanderers

WHEN JIM WENT UP TO LIFT THE SURREY CUP - WE WERE THERE!

Ironsides Sunday team lifted their first ever County Cup after a 4-2 victory over Feltham Wanderers. The state of the Horley Town pitch, which resembled more Bournemouth Beach than Wembley, ensured the game was never going to be be pretty, and so it turned out. The Irons started slowly, and were put under a lot of pressure in the early stages by a young and enthusiastic Feltham side. It was no surprise when they took the lead, midway through the first half, after slack marking in the normally reliable Ironsides defence. If the team needed a reminder they were in a final, that was it, and they turned up the intensity of the game. It was a bad goalkeeping error that allowed Neil Lawrence's header to find it's way into the net, when it really should have been a routine stop. The Irons were in no mood to complain and were happy to go in level at the break. Whatever Manager Neil Harman said at half time, seemed to have the desired effect, as the Irons started the second period far more positively. Tony Eden and Paul Bussetti took command of the midfield, as the Irons laid on the pressure. They took the lead when the Feltham defence was unable too deal with a Kevin Harman long throw. The loose ball fell for Tony Eden, who fired the Irons in front. To their credit, Feltham replied, with a goal themselves, when Lee Peddle was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box, and the resulting penalty was converted. Steve Stacey replaced Kenny Ricklesford, playing his first game for a month, and within minutes the Irons took the lead again.Paul Bussetti fired home from the edge of the box, after another long throw had caused mayhem in the Feltham defence. The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Feltham side, and the Irons piled on the pressure. Kevin Harman was replaced by Gary Byrne, as the Irons looked to close out the game, packing out the midfield. It was no surprise when they added a fourth, Dean Conde's cross was turned into his own net by the Feltham defender. It was the midfielder's last bit of action as he was replaced for the last ten minutes by Scott Wise. With minimal stoppage time, the ref's whistles signalled Ironsides celebrations, and it was club stalwart, Jim Snowden, who went up to receive the cup, their first Sunday County Trophy. Now for the League and League Cup!
